Clean-up at Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane, Las Vegas, NV

On February 19, 2022, Shine City Project went back to its roots of cleaning up the streets of Las Vegas. With gloves, grabbers, and trash bags, the group organized their cleanup at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane. With several restaurants, convenience stores, a grocery store, and a bus stop, the area receives a moderate amount of foot traffic, making it susceptible to litter.

On that Saturday morning, they had fourteen total volunteers with one joining for the first time. As they cleaned up, among the litter found was a considerable amount of food packaging, as well as an assortment of items including some Legos, a cracked cell phone and charger, and a car bumper. Much of the litter was located in the hedges, and it required some maneuvering of branches to have easier access to clean. One of the volunteers even got down to crawl through an opening in the branches and went inside the hedges.

In the end, after two hours, enough litter was collected to fill up seventeen trash bags! Overall, the clean-up was satisfying and rewarding to be able to see the transformation of the area to be cleaner than it was before. Additionally, the Shine City Project volunteers received recognition for their hard work from those passing by. One even stopped while driving her car to get out and provide a small donation. The volunteers are grateful that they could contribute to our community in a small, but meaningful way!
