Clean-up at Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane, Las Vegas, NV

On February 19, 2022, Shine City Project went back to its roots of cleaning up the streets of Las Vegas. With gloves, grabbers, and trash bags, the group organized their cleanup at the corner of Las Vegas Boulevard and Windmill Lane. With several restaurants, convenience stores, a grocery store, and a bus stop, the area receives a moderate amount of foot traffic, making it susceptible to litter.

On that Saturday morning, they had fourteen total volunteers with one joining for the first time. As they cleaned up, among the litter found was a considerable amount of food packaging, as well as an assortment of items including some Legos, a cracked cell phone and charger, and a car bumper. Much of the litter was located in the hedges, and it required some maneuvering of branches to have easier access to clean. One of the volunteers even got down to crawl through an opening in the branches and went inside the hedges.

In the end, after two hours, enough litter was collected to fill up seventeen trash bags! Overall, the clean-up was satisfying and rewarding to be able to see the transformation of the area to be cleaner than it was before. Additionally, the Shine City Project volunteers received recognition for their hard work from those passing by. One even stopped while driving her car to get out and provide a small donation. The volunteers are grateful that they could contribute to our community in a small, but meaningful way!

Service Project with Get Outdoors Nevada, Las Vegas, NV

On February 12, 2022, Shine City Project got down and dirty with Get Outdoors Nevada. Get Outdoors Nevada is a non-profit organization dedicated to connecting people of all backgrounds and ages to Nevada's diverse outdoor places. With service projects every week, Get Outdoors Nevada encourages everyone to discover, experience, and connect to the state of Nevada's public lands, urban trails, and community parks.

On this Saturday morning, Shine City Project volunteers found themselves at the corner of Bruce and Owens at a native pollinator habitat with Get Outdoors Nevada. This habitat was started by Get Outdoors Nevada in order to provide pollinators such as hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies an opportunity for food and shelter. This habitat has a number of native flowers including Firecracker Penstemon, Apricot Globemallow, Desert Marigold, and others.

After receiving instructions and guidance from Get Outdoors Nevada staff, their volunteers helped to remove cages from plants that have outgrown them, as well as remove weeds and grasses that have overtaken the native plants. For a lot of the plants, there were stems or leaves that have protruded out of the wire cages. These stems and leaves could tear away from the plant, so the volunteers proceeded with caution. Once cages have been removed, stakes also had to be pulled out of the ground.

For this service project, they had thirteen total volunteers representing Shine City Project. For two of their volunteers, it was their first time joining us. Overall, it was rewarding being able to work in the native pollinator habitat, and it was equally satisfying being able to pull out stakes, weeds, and grasses after a short tussle. With all that they did, they still had to show some care and love for the plants as they didn't want to harm them. Time and patience were key to their success. By the end of the service project, the group had a great time being at the native pollinator habitat and helping out Get Outdoors Nevada.

Service Project at the Las Vegas Farm, Las Vegas, NV

On February 5, 2022, Shine City Project volunteered at The Las Vegas Farm. Established in 1961 and opened to the public since 1968, The Las Vegas Farm, and its non-profit, Barn Buddies Rescue, has been the home for rescued farm animals for 60 years. A wide variety of animals can be found there including goats, cows, horses, pigs, tortoises, alpacas, ducks, chickens, peacocks, sheep, and many others. The Las Vegas Farm hopes to educate the public about responsible animal ownership and the amount of care and effort that is involved in owning an animal. By doing so, they hope to prevent other animals from being abused, neglected, and abandoned.

On that Saturday morning, four Shine City Project volunteers arrived to help out with several tasks at The Las Vegas Farm. For three of them, their main task was to help fill small paper bags with hay. They had to work together to fill the paper bags with a generous amount of hay while being careful not to tear the bags. These small paper bags would eventually be sold to visitors for a small donation and help support operations at The Las Vegas Farm. Visitors can then use these small bags of hay to help attract and feed the animals. Other tasks that were performed by their volunteers were helping around the farmer’s market by dusting off furniture and helping to scoop up poop from the pig pens. Overall, even though their volunteers were at The Las Vegas Farm for a total of six hours, the time went by quickly as they went about our tasks. They were happy to help out and they look forward to helping out again.

Lunch Service at Las Vegas Rescue Mission

On January 29, 2022, Shine City Project was back again at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. This time the group was led by one of their regular volunteers, Kinesha! They had six volunteers who came to help pack meals for the homeless, as well as serve lunch for residents at the Mission. For the meal packing, the volunteers helped to place bread, bananas, chips, and a drink inside plastic bags for future distribution. Afterwards, it was time for lunch service! Most of the volunteers helped to place food on the trays, a lunch consisting of pasta, garlic bread, salad, soup, and donuts.

Kinesha shared, "The most important thing that the Las Vegas Rescue Mission provides are the meal services. Because the Mission provides food for many of the homeless as possible, it is always a blessing when there are many volunteers who can help out. When there are enough volunteers, the dining hall can be opened to everyone. It is heartwarming to see those who need some extra love have the opportunity to be able to sit down inside and peacefully enjoy a meal."

Food Distribution with "Just One Project"

On January 22, 2022, Shine City Project shared some love with The Just One Project! The Just One Project is a local, non-profit organization that inspires others to be involved and make a difference in order to build stronger and healthier communities. One of their activities, “Pop Up & Give”, connects volunteers through its mobile food pantry, providing and delivering groceries to food-insecure individuals, families, and seniors at more than 30 locations across Southern Nevada every month.

Five Shine City Project volunteers met at Canyon Springs High School, one of several Pop Up & Give locations on this Saturday morning. Preparations were already underway for the start of the Pop Up & Give and cars were already lined up in front of the school. The volunteers divided into two main roles: collecting information from those in the queues, and helping to distribute food such as canned goods, applesauce, cheese, and eggs.

Union Pacific Raliroad Trail Cleanup and Museum Visit

On January 15, 2022, Shine City Project volunteers spent an entire day together in Henderson and Boulder City. In the morning, the team of ten met at Acacia Park in Henderson, NV and joined many other volunteers for a cleanup with Get Outdoors Nevada. They helped to pick up litter along the Union Pacific Railroad Trail, a trail that runs alongside the tracks of the historic Union Pacific Railroad. The trail is well-maintained and is perfect for pedestrians and bicyclists.

At first, the Shine City volunteers couldn't find so much trash, but after walking several minutes they found areas along the trail that were heavily littered. These included a water drainage area and a dirt lot adjacent to some residential homes. An assortment of items were found, including food packaging, children's clothes, and a BBQ grill. In the end, with the help of all of the volunteers who were present for the cleanup, a total of 262 pounds of trash was collected!

After the service project, the Shine City Project group made a short drive to Boulder City to Hemenway Park where they had lunch and enjoyed the view of Lake Mead while observing some wild bighorn sheep. Lunch was followed by a visit to the Nevada State Railroad Museum where the group learned about the history of the Union Pacific Railroad and its role in the construction activities of the Hoover’s  Dam in the 1930s. The group was able to walk around the museum, explore a couple of the exhibits, and enjoy a 40-minute train ride in an open-air train car. The volunteers ended their day with some boba and card games. It was a great time of service and fellowship with each other, and they hope to do another trip together again!

Sunrise Trailhead Litter Cleaning, NV

On January 8, 2022, Shine City Project volunteered at Sunrise Trailhead. Working with both Clark County Wetlands Park and Get Outdoors Nevada staff, the volunteers helped to pick up litter in the area. There were eight volunteers representing Shine City Project. The area along the road leading to the trail was heavily littered with glass bottles, food packaging, and other items. In one part, the ground was covered in a sea of broken glass, and in another part there was a large pile of wire casings. In the end, with the hard work of all the volunteers who came to help, two large dumpsters were filled. It took a lot of effort and volunteers to help clean up the area, and hopefully more can be done to help restore the beauty of the trailhead.

Final Service for the year 2021 for Shine City Project

For the last weekend of 2021, Shine City Project volunteered at the Las Vegas Rescue Mission. On December 26, 2021, ten Shine City Project volunteers assisted with the shelter’s community dinner service. Before the start of the dinner service, some volunteers helped to wipe down food trays while others helped to fill water pitchers and place them on tables. Once the dining hall opened, volunteers served food, provided hot sauce, refilled water pitchers, and performed other tasks. After completing the volunteer service and cleaning up for the day, the volunteers headed to Harrison House where they were treated to a home-cooked dinner by Aunt Katherine of Harrison House.

Overall, the Shine City Project team are glad they could end the year strong with some love and comfort for those who needed it most!

Plant Removal at Pittman Wash, NV

On December 18, 2021, Shine City Project worked with Project GREEN: Friends of Pittman Wash is a non-profit environmental group. Though the Pittman Wash serves as a flood channel for excess rain and run-off water, the Pittman Wash also contains a desert riparian ecosystem that is rare in the Las Vegas Valley.

Nine Shine City Project volunteers met with the Wetlands Biologist for Project GREEN: Friends of Pittman Wash. Their task for the morning was to help maintain an area of the wash by removing certain species of plants, such as tamarisk, palms and cottonwoods with hand saws and loppers. By removing these plants, other native plants will be encouraged to grow. It was satisfying for the volunteers to be able to work together and see the difference their hard work and efforts had in the area. They hope more people can enjoy the beauty of Pittman Wash for years to come!

Toy Drive and Giveaway in Oakland, CA

For this Christmas holiday, YSP/SFP Bay Area joined B.A.S.I.C. Ministry’s toy giveaway by hosting a toy drive in the volunteers’ local community, collecting over 60 toys and $300+ in donations to buy toys for kids.

Then on December 17th the volunteers gathered at B.A.S.I.C. Ministry to pack toys and equipment into a big truck to bring to Elmhurst Park in Oakland to set up for the main event at 6pm. As they were setting up, community members started to gather and kids were running around the park. The whole event was more than just distributing toys, it was a community festival! There was entertainment from singing to dancing and praising God, along with food and a bouncy jumper for the kids. The atmosphere was filled with lots of joyful sounds of the community coming together, and the kids waited patiently for the moment when they could receive their gifts.

After lots of anticipation, the ‘gates’ opened for the kids to receive their gifts. There were over 300 gift bags with two toys in each bag for the children. The kids came in small, excited groups and left with big smiles on their faces. The youth volunteers handed each gift with lots of love and smiles, wishing everyone a Merry Christmas. To see the joy and the many smiles of families as they were handed gifts was a wonderful and heartwarming experience for the volunteers.

“I would do it again in a heartbeat!” said a UC Berkley student.

Volunteering with The Just One Project Food Distribution, NV

On December 11, 2021, Shine City Project volunteered with The Just One Project. The Just One Project is a local, non-profit organization that connects people through its mobile food pantry, providing and delivering groceries to food-insecure individuals and families across Southern Nevada.

Shine City Project’s eight volunteers went to Bridger Middle School, one of the 13 locations The Just One Project holds its “Pop Up & Give” program to distribute food every month. The volunteers helped to unload and organize boxes of food items onto pallets, then divided into several roles to help with the distribution. For the distribution event, cars queued in two lines, one on each side of the food pallets. Before receiving food, information about household size and income had to be collected in order to determine the amount of food they were eligible to receive. Four Shine City Project volunteers were responsible for walking with clipboards and gathering the required information. Afterwards, once information was collected and quantity determined, cars made their way along each of the food pallets where volunteers placed food inside the trunks. Three Shine City volunteers worked with other volunteers to help pass out ham, cereal, tortillas, cheese, milk, and eggs. After receiving their goods and reaching the end, the cars had their trunks closed and were ready to head home! The eighth Shine City Project volunteer helped to direct traffic, making sure that cars didn't crash into each other while merging into one lane.

Snack Bag Gifts for Those in Need, Chicago

On Wednesday December 8, 2021 Youth and Students for Peace (YSP) Chicago collaborated on a service project hosted by CARP (Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles) during their last on-campus meeting of the semester at Harper Community College.

The service project was prefaced with a brief introduction about YSP and its mission to inspire youth to take action and create peace within their communities through doing service projects. The relationship between YSP and CARP is a symbiotic one that allows CARP members the opportunity to put into practice the character education they learned by doing service projects that serve a community.

For the service project the group put together snack bags for people in need at the All Saints Lutheran Church. All the members and guests formed an assembly around a table writing positive affirmations on the bags, passing them down and putting an assortment of snacks in them, and even decorating unique bookmarks. As the bags made their way around the assembly line the participating students and adults could socialize and share about the different service projects they have participated in the past. In the end the group was able to put together nearly 30 snack bags for the church.

Las Vegas Opportunity Village Magical Forest Event Volunteering

On December 4, 2021, Shine City Project volunteered with Opportunity Village for the Magical Forest event. Founded in 1954, Opportunity Village is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing people with disabilities enrichment, empowerment, and employment opportunities. Every year, they serve over 3,000 people in Las Vegas with intellectual and developmental disabilities in hopes of giving them the opportunity to live the best possible lives. Fundraising events like HallOVeen, the Great Santa Run, and the Magical Forest help to provide programs, services, as well as wages and benefits to those with disabilities.

Eight Shine City Project volunteers were part of the Welcome Committee and helped to check-in and give out wristbands for all who entered the Magical Forest. The group volunteered for five hours and helped to welcome a few thousand people. They also had the opportunity to take breaks and enjoy the event themselves.

R.A.K.E.S Service Project in New Jersey

On November 27, 2021 Youth and Students for Peace (YSP) members in New Jersey joined the Collegiate Association for the Research of Principles (CARP) members for Nutley, New Jersey’s R.A.K.E.S service project to help senior citizens and those who are disabled in the community with raking leaves on their lawn. A team of 16 volunteers worked together to rake leaves from the front and back yards of five senior citizens’ homes. The volunteers had a great time and even had the opportunity to sing a Christmas song to one of the senior residents.

Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary Service

For much of November, Shine City Project has been working with organizations in Las Vegas that care for the welfare of animals. For this last week of the month, the group helped out at Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, a place dedicated to providing a safe haven for animals in need. Founded in 1979 by Bill Gilcrease, more than 500 animals make Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary their home, including parrots, chickens, goats, pigs, turkeys, and tortoises. Some of their more unique residents include a mule deer, an ostrich, emus, peacocks, and llamas!

For the November 27, 2021 service project the Shine City Project volunteers worked with Amanda, Operations Manager for Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary, and were shown their task to help clear out debris surrounding the pond at the sanctuary. The pond is where many ducks and geese make their home or come to visit. With rakes in hand, they cleared out leaves, branches, and animal droppings surrounding the pond. All the debris was then shoveled into wheelbarrows and taken away. With eleven Shine City Project volunteers who came to help out, including a new volunteer joining them for the first time, they were able to quickly get the job done.
